Community gardener changes the lock code after neighbor's son is spotted leaving with missing equipment, mother demands a public apology: 'The damage is already done'

How far should you go to protect shared property?

After months of disappearing tools at a neighborhood community garden, one volunteer decided enough was enough and changed the lock code on the shared storage shed. But when rumors spread that a neighbor's son may have been involved, his mother accused the volunteer of publicly humiliating her family and demanded an apology. Now the rest of the gardening group is divided over whether protecting shared property was worth the tension it created.

I would have reacted in a totally different way if my son was the one who took some things from the shed. We all know those mothers who prefer not to understand the conflict and go their way to protect their kid, no matter if the child is the responsable of the damage. In this case, there were things that all the neighbors used to take care of the garden, and those were important instruments for all of them.

And I'll be the first to say that it's okay if you sometimes borrow something and forget to ask for it, but you certainly have to put it back afterwards. Since this was not what happened with Eli (the boy's name), and the issue kept happening for a while, then it's okay to change the lock combination to prevent the kid from stealing. And here is when the mother should intervene and teach him a lesson about taking things that don't belong to them.

Instead of defending him and demanding a public apology for something all the neighborhood knows he did, she should tell her son to apologize and to slowly replace all of the equipment he took. That's a good way to have this whole dilemma sorted out, without creating new conflicts among the neighbors.
